Every parents should afraid about symptoms of celiac disease in toddlers. This disease can affect their health and growth over a long time. Therefore, here are the relation between toddlers’ health and celiac disease.

Celiac disease and gluten

There are some symptoms of celiac disease in toddlers. It is a common conception that toddlers or adults who have celiac disease cannot deal with food with gluten such as wheat and barley based products. Basically, foods with grain also contains gluten, although the content is vary depend on the food itself. Toddlers with celiac disease will have problems with gluten because their immune system will work differently compared to normal people. The gluten, instead of digested and absorbed, will destroy a pat of digestive system called villi. Its functions is to absorb nutrients from food and located in human’s intestine.

With less number of villi in a body, human will have difficulties in absorbing nutrients for food. This is critical for toddlers since they need a lot of good nutrients to ensure their growth. People who have celiac disease in their family line will have an increased chance to have this “gluten allergic” disease. Celiac disease’s effect cannot be seen instantly and it is not clearly shown if a toddler have a celiac disease or not. The best way to decreasing the chance of celiac disease is by doing a gluten-free diet, or at least avoid every food that contains gluten.

Signs of celiac disease in toddlers

We already know that celiac disease is not only affecting toddlers but also adult. The signs and symptoms of celiac disease in toddlers is pretty much the same with adults. The common symptoms in toddlers is diarrhea, decreased appetite, bloating and stomach ache, poor growth, and weight loss.

Diarrhea, bloating, and stomachache is a short term effects of celiac disease in toddlers. This is because their body cannot react pretty well with the food they eat, especially gluten. So parents should be extra careful in feeding their children when they know their family line have celiac disease genes.

Poor growth and weight loss is a long term effect of the disease. This is caused by body which cannot absorb nutrients well. The villi in celiac disease sufferers cannot work well because it is destroyed by the body that already reacted with gluten. Toddlers with celiac usually cannot be identified as celiac sufferers because it starts slowly and often diagnosed as another digestive system disease. This is a critical problem because if the symptoms of celiac disease in toddlers are allowed in the body over a long time and not treated well, it will affect their overall health condition.
