Pelvic inflammatory disease in men, is it possible? In general speaking, pelvic inflammatory disease or PID refers to the infection that affects uterus, fallopian tubes, and other reproductive organs. The patients commonly develop the infection due to the sexually transmitted disease. The infection basically gives the severe pain on the lower abdominal. It could be severer if the infection affects and damages the tissues near uterus and fallopian tubes as well as ovaries.
PID could lead to several complications which are pretty serious. The complications may cause infertility, ectopic pregnancy, abscess formation, and chronic pelvic pain.
Is it possible that men experience PID?
We can say that pelvic inflammatory in men is not possible since the infection happens in woman’s reproduction organs. The infection could only develop if the bacteria that stays in the vagina move up to the top of reproductive organs. That condition only happens during the sexual activity. But keep in mind that even though men will never develop PID, they are still able to experience other infections due to sexual transmitted diseases such as prostatitis, orchitis, or urethritis. When the men have this kind of infection, they can transmit it to his woman partner during unprotected sex.
Risk factors for PID
The risk of getting infected by this disease increases if you have chlamydia or gonorrhea. But also, you could develop PID even though you do not have STI. The factors of PID are such as:
- sex under 25 years old
- sex with more than one sex partner
- unprotected sex
- using the device called intrauterine for pregnancy prevention
- previously had PID
What to do if partner has PID?
Well, we already said that pelvic inflammatory in men is not possible but still, women can develop the disease. So, if your sex partner has PID then you better wait at least a month after the treatment and stay away from any sexual activity during the weeks. It is applied for conventional sex activity, oral, anal, and vaginal too.
Woman that is currently experiencing PID should tell the sex partner about the condition. It is also possible if the man having sex with another woman and he could infect her too. Test for both partners is highly recommended.
Everybody could develop this disease but you can make a change by using protection during sex activity. Other than that, ask your partner to go for PID test with you.
